Student Services - Aboriginal and Islander Education Officer

Aboriginal and Islander Education Officers (AIEO) play an important part in education for staff, students and the Aboriginal community. An understanding of local culture and language and strong community ties contribute to the improvement of educational outcomes for Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal students.

Caisos support Aboriginal students in the areas of academic achievement, participation, attendance, discipline, retention and communication.

The AIEO is a school-based role. They develop, promote and maintain communication networks between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, their parents or guardians, the community and the school. AEIO's play a key role in providing knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history, language and culture within schools.

This understanding promotes respect and harmony. They fulfil their role in collaboration with teachers and the school Principal.
